No surprise there — when we talk about aches, we usually we think of headaches, backaches, stomach aches, and so on. However, it’s important not to overlook toe joint pain. Though our toes are one of the smallest parts of our bodies, they two can feel a big ache or two. Here are some of the most common causes of toe joint pain.

1. Gout. Gout is one of the most painful varieties of arthritis. It results in symptoms like warmth, redness, softness, puffiness, and so on. Gout can affect various parts of the body, including the toes. This condition results from extra uric acid accumulating in the body. The origins can be certain medications and foods rich in purine. This causes uric acid crystals to appear on various joints, such as in toes.

2. Bursitis. This is another condition that can cause toe joint pain. You have hundreds of bursa found throughout your body. The purpose of bursas is to reduce the amount of rubbing between a pair of surfaces that move in opposite directions. Typically, this is where tendons and muscles slide over bones. Bursitis occurs when a bursa becomes irritated. It slides less easily, causing it to become irritated when you move it.

3. Bunions. When the joints of toes become injured, bunions can form over time. After this happens, the big toe bends towards the other toes. The cause of bunions is usually linked to how the bones at the front of the foot are lined up. This results in the bottom of the big toe experiencing too much pressure. When the soft tissues in this region of the foot become irritated, you will start feeling additional aches. You will also see puffiness at some point.
