http://getleantoday.com – Dr. Raj Banerjee shares details about the effects of dietary stressors on female hormone imbalance.
Do you know how they fatten cattle to get them to market? They give them two things. Grains and hormones. You want to fatten a person up? Muffin… Premarin… hmmm. It leads me to ponder, what is more important, daily cycles or price per pound?
In humans, cortisol the stress hormone we talked about is a blood sugar stabilizer; it’s also known as a glucocorticosteroid. Cortisol raises low blood sugar. If you over-consume sweets or grains your blood sugar becomes unstable, and that forces your body to produce large amounts of cortisol.
And most women experience this in a reverse way. They know a certain time of the month, they have certain different food cravings: sweets, chocolate, pastries, things like that. So the hormones and food are intimately linked with one another.
So the second major stress to the adrenal glands, number one is mental/ emotional stress and number two is dietary stressors. So the most common problem in the united states is over consumption. Over eating, compulsive overeating, followed by yo-yo dieting. Gaining and losing weight.
Among the mistakes most people make when they are overeating is they are consuming to much sugar or too many grains. The reason why excessive sugar or grains affects our hormonal system is because when you eat a lot of sugar or a lot of carbohydrate it brings the sugar level in your blood stream very high. When your sugar level rise your body is put into a stress response and that is eventually going to lead to an overproduction of insulin. The insulin is going to drive your blood sugar levels too low. And then your body is going to release cortisol to bring your blood sugar back up.
So you end up in this rollercoaster of up and down when you over-consume sugar or grains. And ultimately its the hormones that you are trying to adapt to that. And every time you raise your cortisol, you are increasing the stress on the adrenals and you are wrecking and inhibiting the ability of your adrenal glands to deal with pain and inflammation. Energy production and mood stabilization.
Other dietary stressors would be eating poor quality foods that don’t have nutrients that we need, like fast foods, or highly processed foods.
And then one of the biggest issues that is going to drive all this is food sensitivity. And the main one is gluten sensitivity. So the most helpful thing that people can do to reduce pain and inflammation, to increase energy levels, and to help with depression and mood problems is to go on a gluten free diet.
